Individual Tax Return 2025: Everything You Need to Know

Lodging your individual tax return for the 2024–25 financial year? Here’s what you need to know about key dates, income reporting, deductions, and ATO updates for Tax Time 2025.

Individual Tax Return 2025: Everything You Need to Know

As the new financial year kicks off, it's time to prepare for lodging your individual tax return with the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). Whether you're a first-time lodger or a seasoned taxpayer, here’s a complete guide to help you navigate Tax Time 2025 smoothly.

📅 Key Lodgment Dates

  • 1 July 2025: Tax time officially begins. You can lodge your return from this date.
  • 31 October 2025: Deadline for lodging your tax return if you're doing it yourself.
  • Later deadlines apply if you use a registered tax agent and are on their lodgment program — check with your agent early.

📋 What You Need Before Lodging

  • myGov account linked to the ATO
  • Income details, including:
  • PAYG payment summaries or income statements
  • Bank interest
  • Dividends, managed fund distributions
  • Centrelink payments
  • Rental property income
  • Business income if you're a sole trader or contractor
  • Deductions and records, such as:
  • Work-related expenses (with receipts/logs)
  • Home office expenses
  • Self-education costs
  • Donations to registered charities
  • Personal super contributions
  • Private health insurance information
  • Spouse and dependants’ income (if applicable)

💡 What's New for 2025?

  • Updated tax thresholds

New tax rates apply from 1 July 2024. Make sure you're aware of changes to your marginal rate and Medicare levy thresholds.

  • myTax Improvements

The ATO has improved its digital lodgment system, making it easier to pre-fill data and review your return before submission.

  • Rental property focus

The ATO has ramped up scrutiny on rental property deductions and income declarations. Ensure your records are accurate and claim only what you’re entitled to.

  • Working from home changes

A revised fixed-rate method of 67 cents per hour is in place. This includes electricity, internet, phone and depreciation on furniture. You must keep a daily record of hours worked from home.

⏳ Why Some Returns Take Longer

The ATO generally processes most returns within 2 weeks. However, delays can happen if:

  • There are discrepancies in reported income or deductions
  • You lodge early before pre-fill data is available
  • Your return is selected for manual review
  • You have outstanding debts or prior compliance issues

✅ Tips for a Smooth Tax Time

  • Wait until late July before lodging to allow the ATO to auto-fill most of your data
  • Use a registered tax agent if your situation is complex
  • Double-check your bank details to avoid refund delays
  • Declare all income, including from the gig economy, crypto, or foreign sources
  • Keep all receipts and records for at least 5 years
