The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has urged more than two million taxpayers who haven’t yet lodged to act before the 31 October deadline. Assistant Commissioner Rob Thomson said the date applies whether you self-lodge or use a registered tax professional, noting you must be on a tax agent’s client list by 31 October to access the lodgment program concessions.
Key points
- Lodgment deadline: 31 October 2025 for self-lodgers; be on a registered agent’s books by 31 October if using an agent.
- Payment timing for self-lodgers: If your return results in a bill, payment is due 21 November, regardless of when you lodged.
- Late penalties: Lodging on time helps you avoid failure-to-lodge penalties.
- Progress so far: Over 8.7 million returns already lodged (approx. 4.4 million self-lodged; 4.2 million via agents).
- Claims caution: Don’t inflate work-related expenses—use the ATO’s 40 occupation-specific guides to check what you can claim.
Three golden rules for deductions
- You paid for it yourself and weren’t reimbursed.
- It directly relates to earning your income.
- You have a record (e.g. a receipt).
If you’re concerned you can’t lodge or pay by the due dates, contact your registered tax professional or check support options on the ATO website beforehand.
Tracking your return
The ATO app and ATO online services are the quickest ways to check progress (most online returns process in about two weeks). The app also provides real-time security alerts (e.g. bank detail changes) and lets you quickly lock your ATO account if something looks suspicious.
